We are engineers who kept running into the same wall. The performance a building can reach is decided long before anyone draws it, by cost assumptions nobody tests. So we built three ventures that test them: design the systems, manufacture them off site, and put the land around them to work.

Mechanical and energy design, feasibility and carbon strategy for buildings that have to hit a target. Education, laboratory, residential and commercial, from an 8,000 sf concept to 500,000 sf of federal laboratories.

A suite’s entire mechanical, electrical, hot water and controls, built and tested in a factory as one unit. It rolls down the corridor, connects to two services, and turns months of trade sequencing into days. Specifications and pricing under NDA.

Firm Six started as an engineering consultancy and stayed one. What changed is what we do when the consultancy runs into a limit. When the trade labour to install a system on site was not there, we went and had it built in a factory instead. When a client was carrying land through a five year entitlement window with nothing on it, we looked at what the land could earn in the meantime.

Each answer became a venture. They are separate businesses with separate clients, and they are run by the same small group of people, which is why the numbers in one are allowed to embarrass the assumptions in another. Toronto based, working across Ontario.
